Foolproof Running under the Radar

            I came across Foolproof while channel surfing. Didn’t know what it was at all. I just sat back and enjoyed it. Then I promptly forgot what it was called and all I could remember was that Ryan Reynolds was in it and what it was about. With this knowledge, years later, my sister finally found it for me on IMDb. This helped me to track down a much wanted copy of the movie for my own collection.

            Kevin (Ryan Reynolds), Sam (Kristin Booth), and Rob (Joris Jarsky) have been friends for years. Over the years they started playing a game. They figured out ways to hack companies’ security and rob them. They called this game Foolproof. But one day a real criminal gets a hold of one of their plans and commits the crime. Now he is blackmailing the three friends to commit a real robbery or go to jail. Will they all get caught or could their job really be foolproof?

            This movie seems to be running under the professional radar. I say this because while there are plenty of user reviews about this movie there really aren’t many critic reviews to speak of. The critics that are speaking up are saying this was a terrible movie, but it would seem they are basing it on how well the movie did at the box office. Granted Foolproof did have one of the highest budgets that a Canadian movie had had at the time, around $2 million, and they barely made back $1 million in the box office, that’s in Canada and the U.S. But you have to look at the movie itself to do a proper review, which is what I’m going to do. This movie has a very nice comedic side to it and it runs through to the very end. They’re not cheap laughs either; each laugh this movie gets is earned. It’s also a very nice heist film. Due to their little club “games” you get to see just how good these characters are at what they do. They each even have a specific role that they play in the heist. One is the planner, another is the muscle, and the last the brains. Unlike most movies with multiple lead characters this movie actually stays focused on all of them throughout the movie. You get to see the transformation that each character goes through as this band of friends enters the “big leagues”. The unfortunate thing about this movie is the twist it has. Now I’m not saying the twist was bad, actually it was great and really fit with the premise of the movie, but rather the fact that this movie has a twist makes some people not want to watch it more than once since they already know what’s going to happen. My solution to this is get on the internet and buy a copy of Foolproof. Then you can take it out and watch it every once in a while, so you may know what’s going to happen but since you haven’t seen it in a while you won’t remember every little detail about it and you’ll still enjoy the film.
