In light of the tragic news
yesterday, I am postponing my review on Alter Egos to do this review on
Bicentennial Man. This is one of my favorite Robin Williams movies that I own.
It has just the right balance of serious with funny to keep me coming back to
watch it again and, judging from this most recent viewing, it still has the
ability to bring tears to my eyes.
Bicentennial Man is about a robot,
Andrew (Robin Williams), who is brought into the Martin family. It doesn’t take
long for the family to notice there is something different about Andrew from
other robots. He has feelings and ideas. He even falls in love. This movie follows the adventure that Andrew goes on as he tries to become human in every way he can.
This is really a great example of
one of Robin Williams’ great movies. He, in the beginning, has to portray a
clucky robot with human characteristics. Then he gets to slowly turn himself “human”.
I mean could they have picked a better comedic actor to portray a robot
learning about the facts of life. Or a better dramatic actor to show that all
he has wanted all his life was to be considered human. It would seem that I am
one of the few critics to give this movie a good review, but that doesn’t
matter to me. This movie was unique. Sure it was another ‘in the not too
distant future’ movies but how many of those followed the lives of a house hold
appliance. How many of those other movies made you fall in love and feel for
the main character who wasn’t even a person? Sure there are some holes. Like
how did he recharge himself while he was out on his adventure and how did he
get power to his house on the beach? But those just seem petty when looking at
this film as a whole. I mean how cool was it for director Chris Columbus to use
the same actress to play two parts at separate times in the film, causing
confusion for the viewers and the main character at the same time. The critics
out there are basically telling everyone that this movie is not worth your time
to see it, but I think you have to take it for what it is. It’s a sappy
romance. It’s a dramatic comedy. It’s Robin Williams in his prime. Please, if
you haven’t seen this movie go out and find it. You won’t be disappointed.
